Dedicated to helping those who require financial assistance to attend our courses and conferences

If you are facing financial barriers to attending scientific learning, training, and networking, Wellcome Sanger Institute offers bursaries and carers’ grants to help researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals participate at our world-class genomics conferences and courses.

We provide flexible, non-repayable bursary support options including:

  • Up to 50% off conference registration fees
  • Up to 50% off UK training course fees
  • Carers’ grants up to £500
  • 100% training course bursaries for scientists based in eligible countries in Africa, Latin America, and South East Asia.

Bursaries by event

Conferences

A limited number of registration bursaries are available for PhD students to attend our conferences, covering up to 50% of the registration fee. Sometimes extra bursaries are made possible by conference sponsors.

To apply for a bursary to attend a specific conference, please see the ‘Financial Assistance’ section on the event information page for more details.

Courses (hosted on the Wellcome Genome Campus, UK)

All our courses hosted on the Wellcome Genome Campus are heavily subsidised for non-commercial participants from anywhere in the world. Additional, limited bursaries are available, covering up to 50% of the course fee, and are awarded on merit. Please view the ‘Cost’ information section on individual event pages for more details. Unfortunately we cannot provide assistance for travel expenses for our UK courses.

Courses held outside the UK (hosted at partner institutions)

We run courses regularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These tailored training courses are free to attend for non-commercial applicants. Limited bursaries are also available to cover travel, accommodation, and sustenance costs, and these are awarded on merit. To apply for a bursary, please complete the bursary section of the online application form for your selected course.

Please note that both the applicant and supervisor are required to provide a statement of justification for all bursary applications.

Carers' Grants

Our carers’ grants help delegates with care costs for children or dependent family members while attending our Wellcome Genome Campus events. The grants can be used to pay for childcare or dependent care at home (e.g. babysitter, carer) or at a registered provider while the delegate is at the event.

For terms and conditions and to apply for a carer grant, please download the Carer Grant application form below. Completed forms must be emailed to the event organiser by the conference registration or course application deadline.
