How to Teach Genomics (postponed)

Nurses, nursing associates and midwives comprise over 50% of the global healthcare workforce, and have an important role in bringing the benefits of genomics to patients. Recent changes in clinical service has seen genomics included in the Nursing and Midwifery standards of proficiency for registered nurses, nursing associates and midwives and as such will need to be reflected in undergraduate curricula.

This new course will equip educators who develop and/or deliver undergraduate nursing and midwifery education programmes with the skills and knowledge to design and teach genomics appropriate for nurses and midwives in their every-day practice.

To be eligible for this course, applicants must be involved in design or delivery of nursing and midwifery education in the UK and have active plans to incorporate genetics/genomics in their autumn 2020 courses. We will encourage applications from all areas of pre- and post-registration(nursing and midwifery education. This includes the four fields of nursing (Adult, Child and YP, Learning Disability and Mental Health).

As genomics is mainstreamed into healthcare over the next few years it is crucial that the next generation of nurses and midwives are equipped to be part of this significant change in the health service. The course aims to provide attendees with the knowledge and the tools needed to enable the delivery of genomics education appropriately within curricula.

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain how genomics applies to nursing and midwifery practice
• Identify the roles nurses and midwives play in different patient pathways
• Deliver education and training to meet the knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements of nurses & midwives around genomics
• Demonstrate how genomics can be embedded into existing and new curricula to meet NMC requirements
• Identify and apply existing educational resources to deliver genomics to student nurses and midwives

The course will start at approximately 12.00 noon on 30 June and finish at approximately 14.00 on 2 July 2020.

• Key concepts in genomics
• Genomic applications in nursing and midwifery practice
• What are the requirements in different areas of practice?
• Genomics and the Educators Toolkit in nursing and midwifery practice
• Hints and tips for teaching genomics
• Designing and delivering a genomic session for nurses and midwives
• Patient perspective and communication skills
• Ethics and genomics
• The future of genomics in healthcare – what’s on the horizon?

This is a residential course. All participants are requested to stay onsite for the entire duration to benefit fully from discussions and interactions with the faculty and other students.
